President's Column: Guadalajara 2008

Greetings ARLIS/NA, Texas-Mexico chapter members. As you all know, this year we are holding our annual chapter meeting in conjunction with the Guadalajara International Book Fair. I hope to see as many of you there. I know that you will find the fair and the city enlightening and exciting. If you don’t know Guadalajara or the book fair, let me tell you one of my unique stories. Once there, I know you will come away with your own special memories and favorites.

The venue is LARGE, and you will see books and meet book vendors from all over the world. Take the time to visit the Latin America and Caribbean vendor aisles. Last year, Cuba had several booths, and you will have the opportunity to purchase library material, as well as unique gifts you will never see in the States. Last year I bought a T-shirt with the Andy Warhol /Che Guevara prints screen printed on it. Because the photographer (Alberto Korda), who took that famous picture of Che, lived and died in Cuba, never receiving remuneration (not even from Andy), for what became an incredibly lucrative (to others) popular culture, iconic image… buying it from the Cubans just made perfect sense. It was a unique opportunity.

President's Column

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Little did I suspect last October in San Antonio, that I would be the one writing you by the following spring. I had hope there would be time to figure out what was expected of me as a VP, President Elect. I’m not complaining. But I am sorry that I missed the opportunity to work with Sam Duncan on behalf of ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter. Sam is still with us, in spirit for certain, and just minutes away from me in Austin. However, due to the demands of his new position, he had to resign as our incoming President. As webmaster, he gave our newsletter a stylish new look, and for this too, he will be esteemed and missed.

President's Column

As I sit writing my column for the final issue of this year’s Medium I find it hard to believe that my tenure as president is quickly coming to an end. It has been a pleasure serving the chapter and working with colleagues across Texas, especially Vice President/President Elect Sam Duncan. The chapter will be in good hands under Sam’s guidance in 2007.

Annual Meeting, October 20-22, 2006

Our progressive meeting beginning in Austin, traveling to San Marcos, and then on to San Antonio allowed attendees to explore a wide variety of cultural institutions in three notable Texas cities. As always the meeting provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues.

President's Column

So much to do and so little time. This thought comes to mind when I think of the coming year and all that we have accomplished as a Chapter in the past few years.

Since our last Chapter meeting, we gathered again at the ARLIS conference in Pittsburgh. Texas members, past and present, met and reminisced. We also discussed our Chapter's goals for the year and how we can reach them. One such goal is to attract future members from neighboring Mexico. Ricardo Reynoso Serralde, Director of the Biblioteca de las Artes, came to find out more about the Chapter. The Mexico Membership Committee is sending the letter of invitation to the list of potential members compiled thus far. Ask Janine, Bonnie, Robert, Phil or I for details about this project.

President's Column

Of all the meetings that I attend each year, the ARLIS/Texas-Mexico annual meeting is the one that I find the most stimulating. The meeting is like a class reunion where we all get to visit with our old friends and, of course, we meet new friends. It is never overwhelming and is so much fun, as it has been for many years.

Just about two months ago, we had our annual meeting at the Kimbell Art Museum. The weather was pleasant. The business meeting, programs and tours went very smoothly and we had a good turnout. I can still picture everyone so relaxed and so happy. I would like to thank the Fort Worth Annual Meeting Planning Committee (Pat Oestricher, Steve Gassett and Sam Duncan), our regional Representative, Pat Lynagh, who reported at our meeting and all of you who helped me in making this meeting a big success.

President's Column

As Summer arrives, news starts to fly. Some think of a vacation to get away from the heat in Texas and others may want to work on projects that they have been putting off for a long time. Of course it is also a good opportunity to move ahead to new challenges.

I am delighted that Jacqui Allen, Vice President/President Elect, has become the Head of Libraries and Archives for the Dallas Museum of Art. Houston's loss is Dallas's gain. We welcome Jacqui to the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Things are changing very rapidly in the Fort Worth Cultural District. We are extremely excited and share our joy for our long time Texas member and supporter, Milan Hughston, who is going to challenge the New York City library world. Milan will be the Chief of Library and Museum Archives at the Museum of Modern Art. We will all miss him and we wish him the best. Congratulations, Milan!

It was a great pleasure to visit with many of you in Vancouver during the ARLIS/NA conference. Not only was the conference a wealth of information on library technology, but the conference also offered us the opportunity to view interesting post-war buildings and to take many not-to-be-missed tours.

After recuperation, it is now time to plan for our ARLIS/Texas annual meeting to be held on October 7-9, 1999. The Planning Committee for the Fort Worth annual meeting has been formed. I wish to give thanks to Milan Hughston and Sam Duncan of the Amon Carter Museum, and Steve Gassett and Pat Oestricher of the Kimbell Art Museum for their contributions and participation in the upcoming activities.

The 1998 Annual Meeting was held in Lubbock on October 15-17. This was the first West Texas meeting for the Chapter and was well attended by 20 members. Dr. Lois Swan Jones offered a panel entitled, “ The Challenge of Finding Art Information on the Internet.” The panelists were representatives from three library types in the ARLIS membership. The panelists were Margaret Culbertson (academic/Art and Architecture), Jacqui Allen (museum), and Polly Trump (public). The panelists shared their knowledge and experience in a lively and informative program.

During the business meeting, Sam Duncan demonstrated a prototype of the new web page that he has developed. Sam agreed to be the Interim Webmaster; Stephen Gassett and Karen DeWitt will assist him. At the end of the meeting, the election of officers was held. Jacqui Allen was elected Vice-President/President Elect and Carl Close was elected Secretary- Treasurer. Congratulations!

I hope that the summer has treated you well and that you are looking forward to a rewarding fall season.

Annual Meeting

Contributing to the slate of fall activities is the chapter’s annual meeting, October 20-22, 2006, in Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio. This progressive meeting will allow participants the opportunity to experience a wide range of collections and their unique material, time to network and socialize with colleagues, as well as a forum to address important issues facing the chapter during the annual business meeting. Registration is due to chapter treasurer Craig Bunch by October 7. Please visit the annual meeting page for further details including information about accommodations. I look forward to seeing all of you in October.
