ARLIS/NA South Regional Representative Report

As many of you know, the ARLIS/NA year-of-transition began at the end of last year’s annual conference in Atlanta and came to a close at this year’s conference in Denver. Now, at the dawn of a new era in the Society’s history, the Regional Representatives have been replaced by functional liaisons who will be providing a conduit for communication between the Board and the groups who are carrying out the important work of the Society.

The new Board liaisons are as follows:

Canadian Member at Large: Liv Valmestad (term ends post conference 2010)

Chapter Liaison: Cate Cooney (term ends post conference 2009)

Report: ARLIS/NA South Regional Representative Column

It was wonderful to see everyone at the recent chapter meeting in Dallas, October 25-28, 2007. Thanks to the organizational efforts of Gwen Dixie and Mark Pompelia, the meeting was a great mix of educational and culturally stimulating activities. We were also afforded time to address chapter business and reconnect with colleagues from around the state. I personally found the exhaustive tour of Fair Park exhilarating and look forward to visiting again during the State Fair of Texas in 2008 with a much deeper understanding of the history and evolution of the fairgrounds and the buildings comprising the complex. The Greek dinner hosted by Gwen was another highlight for me. Gwen’s hospitality, along with her colorful home, created the perfect environment to enjoy each other’s company. President Selene Hinojosa and Secretary Catherine Essinger ran the chapter’s business meeting with great efficiency and aplomb. Congratulations go to Vice President/President Elect Carla Ellard and a warm thanks to Craig Bunch who will be continuing as the chapter’s treasurer in 2008.

South Regional Representative Column

It is with great pleasure that I am able to begin my tenure as your South Regional Representative during a pivotal point in the Society’s evolution. I realize that I am filling a pair of very large shoes left by my predecessor, Heather Ball. In taking on this position, I am inspired to live up to the high expectations she set. As an ARLIS/NA Texas-Mexico chapter officer I had the good fortune to collaborate with Heather on many occasions, and, just as she was, I will be accessible and responsive to any need that the chapter may have during my tenure. I encourage you to e-mail me directly <eschaub@uts.cc.utexas.edu> with any questions, comments, or concerns you have related to the Society.

ARLIS/NA South Regional Representative Report

Heather Ball
ARLIS/NA South Regional Representative

Dear ARLIS/TX-Mexico Members,

Here in Blacksburg the leaves are turning amazing colors—golden yellows and bright oranges …it’s very pretty, but I still miss Texas! I can’t tell you how much I will miss the chapter meeting this year. I will never forget Marfa and how much fun it was to spend time with you all last year. Have a margarita for me.

Now, down to business. Regarding affiliation: if you have any questions at all, or concerns about this process, please let Elizabeth know. She has been participating in discussions on a chapter leaders listserv and is up to speed on the affiliation process. To date, four chapters have signed affiliation agreements, including one from our very own region: DC-MD-VA, Northern CA, Twin Cities, and Mountain West have all signed their affiliation agreements. We have also heard positive reports coming back from several other chapters who are preparing to sign.

From the South Regional Representative ARLIS/NA

The ARLIS/NA 28th Annual Conference is now a mere puff drifting from the smokestacks of Pittsburgh! The 600 of us who were fortunate enough to have gone to the Conference found "The City of Bridges" to have some real gems, such as the Frick Art Museum, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, wonderful old churches, and nearby Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water" and "Kentuck Knob."

The Conference Committee, headed by Ray Anne Lockard from the University of Pittsburgh and Jane Dunwoodie from the University of Dayton, did a masterful job of weaving together a perfect blend of excellent sessions, fascinating tours, lavish receptions and even some time to grab a bite to eat at some of Pittsburgh's finest restaurants.

From the South Regional Representative ARLIS/NA

We are all preparing for a new century - what an exciting time! Along with these plans are those for the first ARLIS/NA Annual Conference of the millennium. The Conference Committee in Pittsburgh is hard at work getting ready for what sounds like a great combination of worthwhile sessions, wonderful tours, and terrific speakers. I hope to see all of you in Pittsburgh from March 16-22!

Things in the South Region are also busy and equally exciting. The newly named ARLIS/Texas-Mexico Chapter met at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth from October 7-10. Chia-Chun Shih, the President of the Chapter, organized and led the annual meeting. As you know, the name change in the Chapter By-Laws was approved at the Executive Board's Mid-Year Meeting in Berkeley, California. The Chapter is now hard at work on plans to recruit new members from Mexico. While at the Kimbell, we saw Sister Wendy and Elvis Costello in one day; however, they weren't together.

From the South Regional Representative ARLIS/NA

It seems like only a moment ago that we were returning from Vancouver, and now here it is July. The Executive Board has been busy in the interim, and I would like to give you an update on some of their activities, as well as those of the other chapters in the ARLIS/NA South Region.

As you probably saw on ARLIS-L, the Board has chosen a management company, Adler Droz, Inc. (ADI), based in Laguna Beach, California. The Board interviewed several prospects, and it was a long and difficult decision. ADI will assist ARLIS/NA in such areas as Membership Services, Publications, Finance, Web Management, Conference Planning, and Marketing. Howard Adler, Chairman of the Board at ADI will be our Executive Director. We look forward to working with Mr. Adler and his staff, and we hope that you, the members, will find their company both accommodating and effective.

From The South Regional Representative ARLIS/NA

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you in the Texas Chapter, as your new South Regional Representative. I feel at something of a disadvantage following in the footsteps of Lee Sorensen, who has represented you so well over the last two years. Lee has filled me in a little on your Chapter and has told me all that you have accomplished in the past. Your proposed name change and By-Laws revisions seem very exciting and innovative. I will be presenting these new By-Laws to the Executive Board in the near future, and I will keep you up-to-date on the progress of the ratification process.

From the South Regional Representative ARLIS/NA

The ARLIS Executive Board has been busy with much "behind the scenes" activity. As all of us know, this often is the most vital work we do, but can often appear to the public like not much is happening. Indeed, we'd like our efforts to appear as "seamless" as possible, but I'd also like the chapters in my region to remain informed on what the Board is working on.

New Executive Director - All of you read in the most recent Update about the change in executive directors from Penny De Pas to Ashley Prather. ARLIS does not employ an executive director, rather, it hires a management firm (in the past five years, Olson Management Group) who appoints a director with Board approval. Penny and the management firm decided on the change to Ashley. The Board was pleased with the change in that Ms Prather is very experienced and--unlike Penny--will have no other associations other than ARLIS to manage. The change came rather suddenly and caught a few of us by surprise. We look forward to working with the new ED, but understand that the learning curve to managing such an operation is quite steep. I know I speak for the Board when I ask members to continue filling in your regional rep on how our management firm meets individual board needs.
